April 2018

A meta typeface designed to create complex lettering and patterns.

This typeface and the resulting poster and animation was made for the International Seminar Week 2018 (ISW) at my University.
In this week we have to choose from a variety of workshops, offering something for every course and student.
The main topic of this semesters ISW was minimalism and complexity.

This semester I got lucky and was able to attend my first priority workshop (when chosing you are able to set 5 priorities).
It was called Metatyping and was held by
Dr. Manuel Sesma from the Complutense University of Madrid.

Goal of the workshop was to understand what "meta" in design and in general means and to use it for a open and generative typeface system which should be used to create whatever we wanted.

I decided to design a geometrical system with as many variations as possible, using three keyboard layers.
- the "plain" letter
   (e.g. "p")
- shift + letter
- alt(/option) + letter

The typeface includes over 130 glyphs, going from thin to thick lines – massive black to light outlined forms, with an always increasing complexity.

In the last two days we should create a DIN A2 poster showcasing all designed glyphs and a short animation showing the typeface in action, writing something.
